This is the only erotic Belgian lesbian vampire film on this list. Promise. Daughters of Darkness has been somewhat neglected when it comes to discussion of vintage European horror cinema. The films of Jess Franco and Dario Argentos of the world have significant fan bases but there are a host of wonderful curios out there waiting to be discovered (thanks to the sheer volume of output). Unlike Spain, Italy and France, Belgium does not have a rich history of horror cinema. Daughters of Darkness, then, is something of an anomaly. But it's a classy picture, eschewing gore and violence in favour of style and a ramping up of the psychological horror. Delphine Seyrig, famous for her turns in arthouse fare like Last Year at Marienbad, gives a wonderful interpretation of the mythical Countess Bathory, who supposedly bathed in the blood of virgins in order to retain her youth and beauty.
