Probably the most predictably divisive film of 2018, Lars von Trier's blacker-than-black comedy about a serial killer (Matt Dillon) recalling five random "incidents" from his murderous past was tailor-made to shock and disgust as much as it amused and impressed.

And while it's totally understandable that many wouldn't take to von Trier's typically uncompromising filmmaking approach, thanks to Dillon's incredible performance, von Trier's vision has a seductive quality to it that's quite tough to shake.

The House That Jack Built is nasty, brutish and really, really long, but it's also full of dramatic rewards for those prepared to follow the director's lead. It is, honestly, one of his most striking efforts to date, yet also one of his most disappointingly underrated.
