15 Most Underrated Movies Of 2018
11. Suspiria
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 64% (6.7/10)
One of the most divisive and hotly debated films of the year, Luca Guadagnino's remake of Dario Agento's horror classic Suspiria is without question a single-minded, uncompromising vision.
Guadagnino smartly decides to reinvent the film conceptually for his own style, replacing Argento's sickly neon visuals with drab, washed-out shades while enhancing the political context of its late-70s German setting.
Dakota Johnson gives her best performance to date as protagonist Susie, though it's Tilda Swinton who runs away with the movie, giving three performances which impressively all feel like distinct characters.
It's long, slow and ambiguous, but it's also a riveting mood piece with atmosphere so thick you could practically choke on it.
The new Suspiria is far from perfect - especially with some of the dodgy visual effects in its nutty finale - but as a bold attempt to retell a classic horror for a new generation, it's a stylish, unsettling success.
