15 Most Underrated Movies Of The 90s

5. Event Horizon

Event Horizon
Paramount Pictures

With the tagline of ‘infinite space, infinite terror’, you already know what sort of film you’ll be getting. Paul W. S. Anderson’s sci-fi and horror genre mashup thankfully also knows exactly what it is, revelling in its ‘haunted house in space’ concept with every bump in the cosmic dark.

Put on an insanely rushed schedule and forced to cut a large part of its runtime, Event Horizon didn’t have the biggest fans - or even any fans - when it first came out; the holes in its editing time and disastrous test screening causing issues from the outset.

It’s obviously not a perfect film, but it is one bursting with sinister style and metaphorical intrigue - more than enough to justify its existence and earn some respect, as it works incredibly well in spite of the technical drawbacks.

Event Horizon really is a fantastic genre piece when we embrace its flaws. Audiences just need to look past the undeserved black mark of its release smeared on its surface.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
