15 Most Underrated Movies Of The 90s

6. The Mask

The Mask
New Line Cinema

How this remains in any way “underrated” is just madness. Yes, the leering shot of Cameron Diaz hasn’t aged particularly well (nor has her arc of being a walking piece of eye candy), BUT STILL, this is one hour 41 minutes of Jim Carrey justifying his existence.

The facial contortions, the one-liners, the so-bad-it’s-easy-to-go-with CG - The Mask is arguably the best comic book movie of all time, with Carrey making various animated cartoonish designs into reality.

As an actor, Jim Carrey was born to play the most outlandish roles possible. The Mask should be up there with Ace Ventura. It’s just as well paced, quotable, self-aware stupid and enjoyable to watch unfold.

Seriously, think of one bad scene. You can’t.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
