Video game movies are bad. It's such an obvious statement that pointing out feels somewhat perfunctory; whether it's poor creative choices or something more intrinsic to the differences in medium, no console-to-cinema movie has ever worked. However, there's every chance that could change in 2016 - not only will the Michael Fassbender-fronted Assassin's Creed finally materialise, but Duncan Jones will deliver his secret, but much hyped, Warcraft.

The latter is certainly the better bet - the man formerly known as Zowie Bowie has proven himself as one of the most astute rising filmmakers, able to subtly capture a tone and fully deliver on whatever the idea at hand is. The thing is, when pointing towards an example of his skill, most people instinctively go for Moon.

Now his cerebral sci-fi throwback is most certainly one of the best films from the genre in recent years, but all that excitement over Sam Rockwell being a clone has led to many overlooking Jake Gyllenhaal making alternate universes. Jones' sophomore feature, Source Code, is a sheer masterclass in high concept sci-fi, taking its idea - go back over the same seven minutes to find out who bombed a train - and explores every facet of it.

Despite that, it sits as a lesser entry in his filmography, when, if anything, it's the better of his first two movies.
