15 Most Underrated Movies Of The Decade (So Far)

6. Don Jon

Don Jon does for sex what (500) Days Of Summer did for relationships; the way media presents this everyday element of life is so skewed from the real world that it can actually have a detrimental effect on those trying to match what they view on screens. And while Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut doesn't quite hit the highs of Marc Webb's film, it does provide a similarly fun, tonally distinct, experience.

Gordon-Levitt goes out of his way to craft a unique movie. He is playing completely against type as the iron-pumping porn addict, while the film uses tricks from the likes of Scorsese and, furthering the Summer comparison, Mike Nichols, to create an elated realism.

The film actually got a rather positive critical reception upon release, but as a C+ CinemaScore rating shows, it really failed to connect with audiences. That it's not the semi-risque JGL/ScarJo rom-com the trailers advertised it as is certainly going to have contributed to that (just see how some people regard Drive), however, the real problem is probably what the film's saying. The dominance of pornography and masturbation, even in a film about a porn addiction, is pretty affronting as it is, but it's what Don Jon's highlighting about it, especially when delivered in such a blunt way, that can make for some uncomfortable viewing.
