15 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of All Time
12. Serenity
A merciful follow-up to arguably the most unjust cancellation in television history, Serenity is a love letter to all fans of Joss Whedon's masterpiece, Firefly. It is, however, this idea of the film as a simple love letter that often starve it of the credit it thoroughly deserves, because it is a genuinely brilliant film in its own right.
Serenity, of course, benefits from the engaging characters and world established in its brilliant predecessor- but it also adds so much to the overall narrative. Most notably the addition of Chiwetel Ejiofor's viciously stoic Operative, a nuanced and terrifying villain who proves a brilliant foil for the charismatic Malcolm Reynolds.
Previously short cut story lines are buttoned up perfectly in an emotional journey for fans of the show and newcomers alike. Serenity is so much more than just a necessary ending to the brilliant Firefly, it is also an engaging and entertaining film all on its own. A must watch for fans of sci-fi, not just Firefly.
