15 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of All Time

13. Annihilation

Equilibrium Movie
Paramount Pictures

Alex Garland's next effort after the critically acclaimed Ex-Machina, Annihilation did not share its predecessors same critical success. Unfairly dismissed as an attempt to be too clever and as a film that was perhaps too vague in its messages, Annihilation deserves more praise than it originally received.

A visually striking and well written effort with some real stand out moments (That bear though) it's a film that rightfully justifies a second watch from those who originally dismissed it. A strong female cast drive the film forward constantly and it feels wholly original throughout.

The ending in particular has questions swimming around your head for days afterwards, as all good sci-fi should, and leaves you considering many of your own views of the world and the very idea of self. At the very least this is a film that deserves more credit simply for how beautifully it depicts the slow collapse of the world around us, surely no mean feat.
