6. The Lives of Others
You know what this list hasn't had a lot of? Boredom.
Sure, it's a cardinal sin for movies to be boring (unless you're Andy Warhol,) but most real-life espionage consists of endless listening in on conversations (and occasional coups of questionable legitimacy), and yet almost no movies in the expansive genre's long history have made a point of reflecting this reality.
Enter 2007's The Lives of Others, a deservedly acclaimed drama which follows the everyday existence of the East German secret police as they monitor residents of the divided nation's capital.
Whilst future The Tourist director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck was accused by some of softening the Stasi's image in the public's mind, many saw this film as a triumphant achievement in humanising the seemingly inhuman and depicting the lives of the oppressed alongside those of their oppressors.
