Starring John Cusack, the crown prince of celebs with surprisingly solid political takes, this underrated 2008 satire sees the actor play a laconic hitman not unlike his role in the earlier Gross Point Blank, though this character is currently knotted up in a convoluted scheme to sell a war in the middle east by antagonising existing conflicts for an amoral oil company.

Shockingly on-the-nose for a flick released so soon after the invasion of Iraq, it’s no surprise that this one was all but hidden by its studio but it’s worth seeking out for a jet-black comedy which reveals, in no uncertain terms, the real impetus fuelling America’s myriad invasions of the Middle East and the uncaring profiteers who grew rich of these endless wars.

Todd Philip’s later War Dogs may have gotten the credit, but this meaner, earlier effort deserves some love as the exceptional alternative war movie it is.
