15 Most Underrated War Movies Of All Time
8. Slaughterhouse 5
Adapted from Kurt Vonnegut’s most famous literary
effort, Slaughterhouse 5 follows the author’s self-insert Billy Pilgrim as he
becomes “unstuck in time”, moving between various points in his life as well as
between reality and a sci-fi alien universe with impunity. Most of the film’s action,
however, centres around the bombing of Dresden, a rare atrocity committed unto
the Germans, rather than by them, during WWII.
In taking its time and unfolding its action thoughtfully, this 1972 war flick goes to pains to humanize even the most apparently unforgivable villains of war and leaves the viewer with no easy answers as a result. An exceptional effort from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid director George Roy Hill, this one has unfairly been forgotten over the years but is well overdue a revisit, particularly for anyone interested in an actual veteran's depiction of WWII.
