15 Most Underrated War Movies Of All Time

9. Lord Of War

Jarhead Jake Gyllenhaal
Lionsgate

A thoughtful and surprisingly funny (in the bleakest way imaginable) vision of international arms trading during a permanent state of chaos and international turmoil, this tongue-in-cheek look at the life of Nic Cage’s alternately over-the-top and chillingly believable amoral gun dealer benefits from a gut punch of an opening sequence which honestly makes the movie more than worth the price of admission alone.

The scene sees a bullet travel from creation to eventual messy use, and this unforgettable sequence underlines the film’s enduring theme: weapons may change, but war, and its unsparing brutality, never does. The flick may struggle late in its runtime to balance its tone, but it’s well worth a watch for the discerning war cinema fan.
