Modern viewers may not recognize Bob Hope, or may only know him via references in more recent comedies like The Simpsons and Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy, but film fans of a certain vintage will recognize Bing Crosby’s co-star from the madcap “Road to” series as an iconic and formative figure in film comedy—Hell, Family Guy’s Road to specials wouldn’t exist without these forties efforts.

1952’s Son of Paleface saw the actor team up with the legendary starlet Jane Russell for a broadly comic parody of the western genre, a pre-Airplane spoof which wisely follows the rule of that flick and all good parody movies: the jokes can’t all be funny, so you better stick in as many as you can think of.
