15 Most Unexpectedly Depressing Movies Of All-Time
15. Everything Must Go (2010)
On the surface, Everything Must Go appears to be a fun-loving Will Ferrell comedy flick about a guy selling random stuff out of his yard. At least, that's what the trailer for this deceitful monster of a film would have you believe, but don't buy into it, people: whilst Everything Must Go is peppered with jokes, it's also a sad meditation on alcoholism. Like, for real. This flick might look like the perfect film to sit down to with friends and beer (?) and pizza, but no. No, no, no. Everything Must Go stars Will Ferrell, so the studio presumably decided that they would market this thing as though it were an Anchorman or a Blades Of Glory, because that sh*t sells (ironically, this didn't). Watching this, it becomes apparent about halfway through that protagonist Nick Hasley has actual, non-funny issues, and the movie wants to deal with said issues in a serious manner. It's a truly unexpected turn, given the marketing angle.
Sam Hill is an ardent cinephile and has been writing about film professionally since 2008. He harbours a particular fondness for western and sci-fi movies.
