15 Most Unexpectedly Depressing Movies Of All-Time

10. Funny People (2009)

The big joke that came out of Judd Apatow's third and arguably weakest movie, Funny People, was that - despite being named so - it wasn't "funny" at all. Coming off the back of a double-whammy like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, it's true that people were expecting something of a laughter riot to match those efforts and were shocked to find that Apatow had gone all Woody Allen on us. Truth is, Funny People wasn't the movie of its more comic trailer; it's a film about a comedian (played by Adam Sandler) getting cancer, an inherently depressing premise no matter how you look at it. Then there's Funny People's sub-plot, which sees Sandler trying to infringe on the life of his ex-fiance, who is married with kids. The whole movie goes back and forth between scenes of amusing banter and musings on mortality. As such it leaves an undeniably sour taste.
