15 Most Unexpectedly Depressing Movies Of All-Time

11. Up (2009)

Let's face it: you only thing you really remember about Up is that scene, right? And it's because of that scene that the movie has successfully cemented itself as one of the most unexpectedly depressing motion pictures ever. The rest of the movie isn't even necessary after that scene. You might as well just switch off after you've seen that scene. And in case you've been living under a rock for the past six years, that scene is the one commonly referred to as "Married Life," by which we are treated to a montage of protagonist Carl Fredricksen and his partner, Ellie, as they happily navigate life together. Then one day she has a miscarriage. That's not a mistake. She actually has a miscarriage in this children's film, which - on narrative terms - was a brave and sobering move. As if that wasn't enough, a few scenes later and Ellie is dead. Carl is forced to go on alone, and as a result he loses the will to live. Like we said, the rest of Up never quite manages to reach the heights of this montage sequence - without a doubt, it has to win the award for "Most Harrowing Scene In A Children's Film Ever."
