5. Amélie (2001)
Amélie is a very simple film. The story it tells is simple - a young waitress named Amélie Poulain decides to improve the lives of those around her. The setting is simple - it's mostly filmed in Paris. The use of color is simple - strong emphasis on red and green, with a little bit of gold for the interiors. But in fact, it's this simplicity that helps the film, particularly the aforementioned use of color. Red and green - the colors most prominently used in the movie - are also polar opposites and could not possibly contrast more, leading to the film having a stunning, almost dreamlike look all throughout it.
Upon release, the movie received great acclaim, and is now the single highest earning French film in the United States.
