11. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Is it possible to make a better science fiction film than '2001: A Space Odyssey'? No? I didn't think so. Anyway, we're not here to necessarily talk about the quality of these films overall (as you'll be seeing soon), but rather the stunning visual aspect. And few films have ever been able to achieve the amazing level of special effects that 2001 has, despite the fact it was made over 40 years ago. From beginning to end, 2001 is chock full of stunning and memorable visual moments - the crew walking around and exercising in zero gravity; the realistic look and feel of a future spaceship; HAL himself; that weird.... baby thing floating in space. But perhaps the most famous of all is the classic "light tunnel" sequence as the main character is hurled through space at incredible speeds.
Excuse me, I feel the sudden need to go listen to Pink Floyd...
