8. Raise the Red Lantern (1991)
And on we move to another entry dedicated almost entirely to its brilliant use of color. Raise the Red Lantern has an interesting take on this idea... namely, red is the dominant color throughout the film, but is occasionally contrasted with a deep blue (seen above). Or - sometimes - it's just pure red.
Many critics noted it was almost as if the film had been shot with the mentality of it being a silent picture, in that the visuals would be capable of carrying the story on their own. The response to the film was near universal praise, both for the storytelling and the cinematography, and it won many awards for both (including being nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar).
