9. Blade Runner (1982)

blade runner city While 2001: A Space Odyssey is clearly the greatest science fiction film of all time, Blade Runner gives it a run for its money. An awesome and surprisingly deep plot about a detective tracking down robots that look like humans? Shut up and take my money! But complementing the incredible story is an equally incredible set of visuals. First off we have the bleak dystopian city skyline, complete with overpopulation, air pollution, and gigantic corporate ads. Next we have that contrasted with the simple beauty of a setting sun being observed through the windows of a room decked out in ancient pillars and tile flooring. blade runner windows This movie also uses its visuals to heighten the plot, and to very good effect. We're all familiar with the cliche of using rain during sad or depressing moments, but none of them come close to being as well-used as the rain during Roy Batty's "tears in the rain" monologue.
