Primer director/ reliable headf*** helmer Shane Carruth proved he could create a memorable sci-fi adventure with his tense and absurdly complex no-budget debut way back in 2004. But it’s fair to say that, beloved as Primer is, the spare effort left something to be desired in visual terms—it’s mostly just two blokes (or at least, a few versions of them) in one room.

But the mercurial genius more than made up for these shortcomings with 2013's Upstream Color.

A stunning, indecipherable belated follow-up, this flick's plot follows a pair of scientists researching a parasite whilst falling in and out of love, but you’ll mostly remember its stream of strange, haunting, and difficult to discern imagery, a psychedelic trip which gives even 2001: A Space Odyssey a run for its money.
