4. Beyond The Black Rainbow
Another recent low budget science fiction horror film with a tendency to lean towards the cryptic and nebulous was Beyond The Black Rainbow, the directorial debut for Canadian filmmaker Panos Cosmatos. Cosmatos's visual style here has an undeniably retro feel throughout, with glaring over-saturated colours dominating many of the shots. The undercurrent of horror, as the attempts to force something of a transcendence in the human experience goes horribly wrong, adds to the midnight matinee feel of the film. Beyond The Black Rainbow might not be the best independent science fiction movie in recent years but Cosmatos deserves credit for sticking to his guns and directing a work which feels singular and unique in its vision.
