15 Most Weird And Twisted Movies This Decade (So Far)
5. Upstream Colour
Anyone who has sat through Shane Carruth's mind-boggling debut feature Primer will have a good idea of just how far cerebral cinema can be pushed, if only you have a filmmaker willing to commit. As far as time travel movies go it's about as brilliantly confusing as they come. To say that Carruth - who wrote, directed, edited, produced composed and designed his follow up flm, Upstream Colour, not to mention starred in it as well - took things several steps further into oblique and mystifying cinematic territory is perhaps an understatement. Here, figuring out what on earth is going on is the ultimate challenge the viewer has to face. Yet at the same time, there's something to be said for letting the imagery and sound design wash over you while viewing Upstream Colour - pondering the nature of the parasite which affects the two main characters is perhaps beside the point, and just as the film explores the breaking of cycles so too should the audience break their conditioning on how we should watch movies.
