Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier is no stranger to directing weird and unusual movies - ever since he introduced the world to the adults who liked to pretend to be handicapped in his Dogme 95 movie The Idiots, challenging conventions has clearly been his thing. That Melancholia is an uneven, sometimes absurd film, perhaps only adds to the strange vibe which permeates throughout. Here, von Trier fuses a listless, depressed feminist angst with something much broader, introducing an approaching rogue planet heading straight for a collision with earth. Melancholia certainly divided audiences and critics alike when it was released in 2011 but it can't be denied that the slow motion opening shots and closing moments of the looming planet which bookmark the film lend the melodrama a primal, surreal aura
