Time travel-based movies have the inherent potential to throw the audience into a fit of wonderment as the narrative layers one potential paradox on top of another - this is certainly the case for Predestination, which twists and turns with increasing frequency as the movie progresses towards its conclusion. A barman passes the time talking to a strange man in his bar, who explains that he used to be a woman and fell pregnant shortly before discovering that she was a hermaphrodite and required a sex change after the birth to avoid a premature death. This set up is just the beginning of a movie which sees the characters' identities blurring into a confusing mass. Predestination is one of last year's hidden gems, visually bold and not afraid to attempt to tackle a dauntingly complex plot, but it is Sarah Snook who emerges the victor - her performance is sure to catapult her towards great things.
