8. The Dance Of Reality

Another Latin American filmmaker with a penchant for the weird and unusual is Alejandro Jodorowsky - his earlier works including El Topo and The Holy Mountain are seen by many as the Holy Grails of surrealist cinema and remain cult classics to this day. Just as Carlos Reygadas opted for the autobiographic route with Post Tenebras Lux, so too does Jodorowsky with his most recent film The Dance Of Reailty. Yet this is childhood remembered through the refracted prism of a long life lived, merging anecdote with metaphor and layering a shimmer of abstraction over the top for good measure. The sight of Jodorowskys fictionalised mother urinating on his father's bare chest is just one of the odd sights the audience can look forward to when settling down to The Dance Of Reality.
