2. Possum

Indie horror film Possum stars Sean Harris as a mentally ill, downtrodden children's puppeteer forced to confront both his past demons and the titular, spider-like puppet.

Despite its low budget and consequent lack of complex creature effects, Possum is an uncommonly atmospheric horror that makes the most of Harris' firmly committed performance and that sublimely unsettling spider puppet.

You don't see Possum too much throughout the movie, but director Matthew Holness keeps both arachnophobes and everyone else on edge by constantly teasing its emergence.

It's not the movie to watch if you're craving jump scares and slick production values, but as a gritty, grimy look at the lingering effects of trauma, it's a tough one to shake.
