12. The PG-13 Rating - Venom

There was much hand-wringing ahead of Venom's release over its MPAA rating, with director Ruben Fleischer giving vague, non-committal remarks while fans desperately hoped that the head-chomping anti-hero would get a fittingly permissive adult rating.

But anyone with much knowledge of how Hollywood works should've been expecting a PG-13 from the outset, and because Sony desperately wants those hormonal teenage boy dollars, of course the movie ended up PG-13.

The result is a film that has to jarringly cut away from Venom (Tom Hardy) biting people's heads off, and though fans at least resigned themselves to getting an R-rated cut on home video, producer Matt Tolmach rubbed salt in the wound by confirming the film was always conceived as a PG-13.

With an R-rating Venom could've gotten so much gorier and kinkier, but in the pursuit of the maximum possible payday, the end result is disappointingly tame and neutered.

In Sony's mild defence, it did end up grossing $850+ million worldwide, so at least it wasn't for nought.
