15 Movie Moments That Pissed Off Fans Most In 2018
11. Mako Dies...For No Reason - Pacific Rim: Uprising
The Guillermo del Toro-less Pacific Rim sequel gets so, so many things wrong - namely turning Charlie Day into the Kaiju-banging antagonist - but nothing stung more than the decision to needlessly kill off hero Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) at the end of the film's first act.
In addition to giving Mako virtually nothing to do and relegating her to the role of a glorified paper-pusher, she ends up having all of her agency stripped away as she perishes in a fiery helicopter explosion that has zero emotional impact whatsoever. Aside from anger, anyway.
Given how much effort the original movie put into making Mako a likeable hero with an affecting backstory, ditching her like this was absolutely baffling. And if you're gonna kill her off, why not at least give her a heroic, sacrificial death rather than a totally lame and passive one like this?
