15 Movies That Made 2017 The Dumbest Year Ever
7. The Circle
Despite being adapted from a popular book, The Circle is one of the year's most embarrassing misfires, a weirdly facile cyber-thriller about the dangers of social media and the ever-increasing encroachment of technology on our private lives.
Free of the satirical flair that might make its premise work, the film takes itself more seriously than most funerals, while Emma Watson turns in a boring performance as a boring, idiotic character, John Boyega is weirdly inserted into several scenes with CGI, and to make things even worse, it ended up being Bill Paxton's final film. What a bummer.
Overlong, underwritten and many times stupider than a film from James Ponsoldt (The End of the Tour) should ever be, The Circle's single saving grace is a not-totally-embarrassing performance from Tom Hanks. That's all it has to offer.
