15 Movies That Thought They Were Smart But Totally Weren't
10. Transcendence
Since this had a killer premise (a dying scientist's consciousness is uploaded onto a supercomputer and becomes far too powerful), a great cast and was the directional debut of Christopher Nolan's cinematographer, Wally Pfister, Transcendence was one of the most anticipated movies of 2014... and then one of the most disappointing.
Johnny Depp's sleepy performance, the underwhelming script and the general tedium of the entire affair drag it down, but perhaps Transcendence's worst flaw is that - just like quite a few of the movies on this list - it is never aware of its own ridiculousness and presents its nonsensical story as something deep and serious.
It's constantly throwing in ridiculous and meaningless things like sentient nano-particles, clones, and Johnny Depp's character basically becoming an AI God and building a technological utopia, yet it never drops the solemn tone, meaning that more often than not this movie is unintentionally hilarious.
There's no doubt that Transcendence had the potential to be a really smart movie, if only the idea had received a better script. Alas, it wasn't to be.
