15 Movies To Watch Out For This Oscar Season

14. Unbroken

The Buzz: Angelina Jolie directs a biopic of of World War II hero and Olympic track star Louis "Louie" Zamperini (who passed away in July of this year). Though the movie is at present sight unseen, the prestige-worthy subject matter and lofty promotional material so far suggests an inspirational, emotional story which is aiming to just bypass the festival circuit altogether and run away with Best Picture when it finally starts screening for awards voters some time in early December. Up-and-coming British actor Jack O'Connell plays Zamperini, and needless to say, all eyes are on him to see if he can catapult himself into the instant A-list with his performance. Oscar Predictions: Expect a shedload of nominations, almost certainly for Best Picture, Best Director (Jolie), Best Actor (O'Connell), possibly Best Supporting Actor (Domhnall Gleeson), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and even possibly some below-the-line crafts nods as well. With such strong material, a solid cast and a proven director at the helm, this would have to go seriously wrong not to be a heavy favourite for the big one. If it scoops Best Picture, then Best Director is also likely (though not guaranteed), and the Coen Brothers' screenplay is definitely a major favourite. O'Connell, meanwhile, could easily get pushed out in a competitive field, and the rest are totally up for grabs. Release Date: December 25th (US), December 26th (UK)
