15 Movies To Watch Out For This Oscar Season

13. Birdman

The Buzz: Alejandro González Iñárritu directs Michael Keaton in a gleefully self-reflexive role as an over-the-hill actor best-known for playing a superhero, who attempts to stage a successful run on Broadway. Reviews were borderline-rapturous following its Venice Film Festival premiere, commending Keaton's superb lead performance, Iñárritu's direction (which seamlessly blends the movie's long takes to form one convincingly continuous shot), the wry narrative and pretty much every technical aspect of the film's construction. Oscar Predictions: Even with its left-of-center material, nominations are likely for Best Picture, Best Director (Iñárritu), Best Actor (Keaton), Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing. There's little-to-no chance the movie will scoop many major awards due to its niche appeal, pretty much cutting Picture and Director out of the running right away. The Academy loves a comeback story, so Keaton has a fair shot at Actor, though it wouldn't be surprising to see Birdman scoop a Cinematography gong and go home otherwise empty-handed. Release Date: October 17th (US), January 2nd, 2015 (UK)
