15 Movies You Loved As A Kid (That Are Actually Terrible)

13. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Ace Ventura Jim Carrey
Warner Bros.

If you haven't watched Ace Ventura: Pet Detective recently, the only sane advice is to keep it that way. However, 1994 was undeniably the year that made Jim Carrey's career, with him starring in three stonking box office hits - Ace Ventura, The Mask and Dumb & Dumber.

And though the latter two films have aged surprisingly well over the last 25 (!) years, Ace Ventura? Not so much.

It's easy to see how Carrey's rubber-faced mugging had an easy appeal to kids who could be satisfied by that wackiness alone, but outside of Carrey's go-for-broke work, this film is a slog.

Where to begin? The central plot - involving the kidnapping of the Miami Dolphins' mascot - is painfully dull, the tone veers wildly between kid-friendly and absolutely not, and the third act of the film has aged horribly with its flippant transphobia.

Ace Ventura is a "vital" film in Carrey's career for better or worse, but viewed with adult eyes, it's more painful than entertaining.

Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes). General video game, TV and film nut. Occasional sports fan. Full time loon.
