15 Must-See Blumhouse Movies

11. Ma

Sinister Ethan Hawke
Universal Pictures

Blumhouse's most recent release stands out in a year full of disappointing horror films (so far) as, come to think of it, one of 2019's finest horror films yet.

As anyone would expect, the best part of it is Octavia Spencer's performance. While many will wonder why a three-time Oscar nominee is starring in a low-budget horror film, she does an extraordinary job in Ma and gives a blisteringly intense performance that's very hard to watch at times. At the same time, she fills the role with the right level of pathos, creating an antagonist that's both sympathetic and chilling.

While the film is carried by Spencer, it's a generally good effort all-around. The teenage leads are well-written and played, the film is genuinely disturbing and it gets twisty without ever feeling ridiculous, which is a trap many similar films fall into. Not a great film, but a good one and certainly better than director Tate Taylor's last film, The Girl on the Train.
