15 Obscure Horror Films You Need To See
2. Trick 'r Treat
In 2007 director Michael Doherty didn't so much as unleash this horror masterwork on audiences, more like he just put it out there; condemning it to be an eternal slow burner, like a jack-o'-lantern with only a tea light inside to draw the baying hordes. Given only a limited cinema run, and a quiet DVD release, the film epitomises a sleeper hit.
Centred on one lively Halloween evening, the film flits between four alternate tales, scaring us with vampires, kiddie killers and, holding it all together, an instantly iconic bogeyman in the pumpkin-headed Sam. So iconic, in fact, that you can buy the toy.
Everything about this vibrantly shot and expertly soundtracked movie screams franchise material, but despite Doherty announcing a sequel back in 2013, there is nothing on the slate. Given the director's recent success with his black comedy festive present, The Krampus, it's not looking like we'll see a follow up anytime soon.
