15 Original Upcoming Movies That Might Save Hollywood
11. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
Release Date: June 3
What It's About: A mockumentary depicting the popstar lifestyle, revolving around fading pop star Conner4real (Andy Samberg) as he tries to remain relevant, all while his personal entourage attempt to keep him under control.
Why It Can Save Hollywood: For one, The Lonely Island are hilarious, and this has the potential to become Spinal Tap for pop music if the team can nail the right mix of outrageous, surreal comedy and smart pop-culture commentary.
Plus, it's got a stupid-good cast, including (but certainly not limited to) Sarah Silverman, Imogen Poots, Bill Hader, Joan Cusack, Will Arnett, Martin Sheen and even the likes of Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg, Simon Cowell, Seal, Pink and Jimmy Fallon playing themselves.
Sure, a cameo conveyor belt doesn't instantly equal comic gold (just look at Zoolander 2), but what's been seen so far looks firmly on the pulse of contemporary, packaged pop music, while sprinkling a healthy dose of the Island's absurdist humour.
This could be a majorly refreshing cult comedy amid all the CGI-driven tentpoles flooding our screens over the next few months.
