15 PERFECT Scenes In Otherwise Disappointing Movies

13. The Dictator: Ironic Speech

The Lost World Sarah
Paramount Pictures

The Dictator was another outrageous comedy satire from Sacha Baron Cohen, but it was far less successful than Cohen's previous efforts. The Dictator is vulgar and annoying, has a pointless romantic subplot and is just, in general, a bit much.

The film's goal of being a political satire is rarely met due to the film's focus on crude jokes above all else, but it does boast a very clever scene at the end.

The main character, General Aladeen, gives a hilarious speech at the UN Headquarters in which he explains the joys of dictatorship and tells the Americans what they could do if they were a dictatorship. He describes things such as 1% owning the country's wealth, torturing foreign prisoners, lying about going to war, having one particular racial group in prison and ignoring the needs of the poor regarding education and healthcare.

In other words, he's unknowingly describing America and this scene serves as a hysterically funny send-up of America, making it the one time when the film really met its target of being an effective political satire.

Unfortunately, the film descends back into immaturity right after this scene.
