15 Planned Horror Film Remakes That Thankfully Never Happened
3. Suspiria
In 2008 it was announced (via MTV) that David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, Joe) was planning on directing a remake of Dario Argento's Suspiria. Generally considered one of the greatest horror films of all-time and with a huge cult following, the news was met with hostility by many. Argento himself displayed scepticism but Green was confident that he and the fans would be impressed with the remake. Green acquired the rights to the original Goblin score (to be interpreted by Steve Jablonski) and promised to make the film 'artful'. The screenplay was written and Green had hoped to begin shooting in 2012, but it never happened. The reasons were both financial and to do with the marketing of the film, as Green explained in 2013:
Nothing. It's just not the right time for that movie to exist. It's a classy, elegant horror movie and people want to see things that are a little more raw, like found footage. Nobody's really begging for something that's elegant, classy and expensive.
It's fair to say that nobody was really begging for a Suspiria remake, either. Green is a good director, but Suspiria is the kind of film that should be left alone. It is not something that could, or should, be recreated. There will, however, be a Suspiria TV series (overseen by Argento) and will feature a Sherlock Holmes type character investigating supernatural mysteries.
