15 Planned Horror Film Remakes That Thankfully Never Happened
8. Pet Sematary
Like Christine, Pet Samatary was based off of a work by Stephen King. Unlike Christine, Pet Sematary was a box-office success, pulling in $60m on a $12m budget. Rumours of a Pet Sematary remake have been circulating for years but they began to gain traction in 2010. Screenwriter David Kajganich (Blood Creek) was working on the script and seemed to have had a great experience working on it, telling Stephen King fansite Lilja's Library in 2010 that:
I should say up front that Pet Sematary is my favorite King novel and adapting it was one of the best screenwriting experiences Ive had, creatively speaking. In its modern way, I think it is easily the equal of anything in the literary canon by Hawthorne or Poe, so I approached the book as a piece of literature as opposed to a horror concept to be pillaged. It was a pure pleasure.
Regrettably for him, Paramount Pictures didn't like his draft and rejected it. They wanted something that would appeal to a younger audience. So they brought in Matthew Greenberg (1408) to write and Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) to direct but then nothing. In 2013 Variety reported that the project was back on, this time with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) directing. The hype fizzled out and nothing has been said about the project in years.
