15 Planned Horror Film Remakes That Thankfully Never Happened

9. Christine

Is Hollywood determined to remake every single one of John Carpenter's films before 2020 or something? It sure seems that way. Christine, unlike They Live and Halloween etc., is not one of Carpenter's best-remembered films, but there were still plans to give it an update for the new millennium. Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) had hoped to write and direct a new take on Stephen King's Christine, a tale about a young man who buys a killer car. Carpenter's version was released in 1983 and had a lukewarm critical and commercial reception. The studio, however, were not interested despite Landon's enthusiasm. As he explained to ShockTillYouDrop.com in 2007:

I tried so hard to convince Sony, because they own the rights to the book. Look, sometimes I write crappy things - I'll be honest about my work - but I wrote one of the coolest treatments ever for a remake [...] I couldn't get past the idea of doing this movie. The book was much more of a possession story. It was so cool. I'd love to make that movie, I love the book so much.

That Sony were not interested, given how quick studios usually are to exploit any horror property from the 1970s and 80s, is telling.
