15 Popular Movies Which Were Notoriously Difficult To Produce
13. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)
South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone had an instant hit with their '90s cartoon series but feared they were close to being cancelled. They wanted to make a movie where everything was as vulgar and imaginative as possible whilst they still had the chance.
This became an ongoing battle on censorship with the motion picture association. Paramount Pictures wanted it to be PG-13 but Parker and Stone insisted it had to be R-rated. Several moments from the original plot were removed to keep it below the NC-17 rating.
Liane Cartman’s internet video involved her having sex with a horse but the MPAA didn’t want to encourage bestiality. Saddam Hussein was going to be in the electric chair but it was deemed too gory. Other examples include Winona Ryder firing ping pong balls out of her vagina, Conan O’Brien shooting a gun to his head and a concentration camp scene, all of which were deleted.
The animating team were exhausted from having to juggle both their animated feature and the current series, with the film still being edited just two weeks before cinematic release.
Trey and Matt had a few last laughs as they deliberately used 399 swear words, one word away from an NC-17 rating. The phrase ‘Bigger, Longer and Uncut’ is actually a penis joke that went unnoticed before it was too late. Best of all, the show never got cancelled like expected and has since grown in popularity.
