15 Potentially Awesome Films Undermined By Their Terrible Endings
12. 47 Meters Down
47 Meters Down is one of the best shark movies out there for sure and it mines every possible thrill out of its brilliant premise - two sisters are trapped inside a shark cage at the bottom of the sea - to nail-biting effect. Shame about the ending though.
Like many horror movies, 47 Meters Down has a plot twist. Now, what's the number one plot twist you Never, Ever do? 'It was all a dream'. Unfortunately, that's what 47 Meters Down does.
After one of the sisters, Kate, is apparently killed by the sharks some oxygen tanks are dropped down to the pair and it turns out Kate is alive. Kate and her sister Lisa make a break for it and manage to get to the surface in a painfully tense climax... only for it to then turn out that Lisa hallucinated the entire thing due to nitrogen narcosis (brought on by the tanks dropped down to her) and Kate is in fact dead. Lisa is then rescued by the coast guard.
This is a thoroughly jarring ending to an otherwise enjoyable genre film, since the film ret-cons a great finale in a thoroughly irritating manner and Kate's death felt completely pointless and overly bleak. Sometimes, we just need a happy ending.
