15 Potentially Awesome Films Undermined By Their Terrible Endings

11. Life

Signs M. Night Shyamalan
Columbia Pictures

For the record, this doesn't really apply to the ending of Life,a science-fiction horror film about a very sinister Martian life form that invades a space station and kills its crew one by one, since the final twist is pretty cool, but more to the film's latter reels as a whole.

It's hard to think of any other recent horror film that started out so well before becoming so indifferent and bland by the end. Life arrives armoured with Daniel Espinosa's great directing and a stacked ensemble cast and at first, it's both horrifying and suspenseful. Then... it just sort of gives up.

The death scenes become more and more rote, the scares lose any genuine impact and the film ultimately becomes a tedious, empty Alien rip-off.

Overall, Life still gets a pass to some extent due to the overwhelming strength of its first half, but thanks to how boring it gets it's difficult to look back on Life with any particular fondness.
