15 Predictions For 2014 Movies Everybody Got Wrong
12. Penguins Of Madagascar Will Be A Lame Spin-Off
The Prediction: A spin-off film starring the mildly entertaining supporting characters from the Madagascar series? This has unimaginative flop written all over it for sure, right? The Reality: To the surprise of most, Penguins of Madagascar didn't just earn solid reviews from critics (72%), but it's better reviewed than either the first (55%) or second (64%) Madagascar films, and settles in at just a slightly lower score than the third one (79%). Penguins may boast a relatively disposable plot (a claim that can also be leveled against the Madagascar films themselves), but it's absolutely dripping with fun personality, with the movie allowing Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private to become fully-fledged characters rather than mere asides in someone else's movie. John Malkovich playing the villain and Benedict Cumberbatch voicing a suave wolf spy certainly didn't hurt either. Frankly, the film was good enough that, for many, there's surely more enthusiasm for a Penguins sequel than Madagascar 4 right now.
