15 Predictions For 2014 Movies Everybody Got Wrong

13. The Lego Movie Will Be Nothing But A Glorified Lego Commercial

The Prediction: The Lego Movie, though promoting a veil of ludicrous insanity, will basically just be an excuse to sell more of the tiny plastic blocks to kids. The Reality: The Lego Movie is that rare gem: it's a movie based on a children's toy that absolutely makes you want to go out and buy more of that toy, but at the same time doesn't at all feel like a 100-minute advertisement. By name alone, this film sounds like a potential corporate-mandated creative disaster, yet with filmmaking wunderkinds Phil Lord and Chris Miller at the helm, they took a potentially crass exercise in consumerism and made it one of the year's most gleefully entertaining and heartfelt movies. With a sweet message about the power of imagination and a widely-praised divergence into live-action during its insane finale, The Lego Movie surpassed virtually all expectations, boasting enough gorgeous animation that it's surely the front-runner for this year's Best Animated Feature Oscar.
