15 Predictions For 2014 Movies Everybody Got Wrong

10. The Fault in Our Stars Will Be Another Sappy Weepie Movie

The Prediction: Another adaptation of another teen weepie novel? Great, here comes the avalanche of emotional manipulation and cornball cheesiness. The Reality: It's easy to be cynical about movies like this because of how often they're terrible: just look at all those Nicholas Sparks adaptations that deal with death and disease in woefully tacky means. This adaptation of John Green's hit novel, however, is a very different beast, a disease movie with a soul, and lucky enough to feature the brilliant Shailene Woodley in the lead role. What really distinguishes this isn't just its emotional core, but the fact that it's clearly aware of all the disease movie tropes and deliberately tries to avoid most of them. Fine supporting parts for the likes of Laura Dern and Willem Dafoe further class up proceedings, and as a result, the movie wasn't just a staggering commercial success (grossing $304 million against a $14 million budget) but it scored an impressive 80% with critics as well.
