15 Predictions For 2015 Movies That Everybody Got Wrong

11. Joel Edgerton Is The Bad Guy, Jason Bateman Is The Good Guy - The Gift

The Prediction: The trailers for The Gift didn't suggest much more than a straightforward thriller, in which the creepy Gordo (Joel Edgerton) becomes increasingly obsessed with the life of his likable former high school friend Simon (Jason Bateman). Bateman's the good guy, Edgerton's the bad guy, right? No ambiguity here. What Actually Happened: Writer-director-star Joel Edgerton did a fantastic job manipulating audiences, making them expect a fairly down-the-line thriller (in large part due to the marketing), only to flip the script and reveal that the reason for Gordo's actions is because he was subject to abuse from Simon, who was a school bully, when they were young. Though Gordo is still undeniably a weirdo, it isn't as simplistic as rooting for Simon to blow him away: by the end of the movie there's a perversely delicious quality to the fact that Simon's new baby with his wife Robyn (Rebecca Hall) might in fact be Gordo's (it's implied he may have sexually assaulted her). Yes, Gordo is potentially a rapist a**hole, but Simon is himself a harsh schemer whose behaviour betrays the usual likable funnyman role Bateman carves out for himself. They're both bad men, and it's just a million miles away from what most surely expected from those generic-looking trailers.
