15 Predictions For 2016 Movies That Everybody Got Wrong
7. Will Smith Cameo - Independence Day: Resurgence
A big hold-up with Independence Day: Resurgence was Will Smith’s reluctance to come back, and the studio’s dogged insistence that he had to appear. This saw a back and forth over the years of scripts being written that included his character, and then rejected when he said no.
They rolled the dice one last time, writing a script that featured his character and one that featured his character’s son instead. Smith passed to make Suicide Squad, which was the right choice since ID: Resurgence was a critical and commercial dud.
It probably would have been more of a hit if he’d returned, but it wouldn’t have been much better either.
